The 4 Pillars of Kundalini Yoga
Jun 01, 2023
Kundalini Yoga is an ancient, once secret practice that dates back to 1400 BC in the Vedic texts. It is a science based upon four technologies:
- Conscious Breathing
- Physical movement or postures
- Mantra & sound vibrations
- Meditation & Mudras
In as little as three minutes, these combined four technologies effectively tune the body to a higher frequency, achieving a heightened state of consciousness while successfully reducing anxiety and stress.
Called the “Yoga of Awareness”, the intention of this practice is to awaken our full human potential through increased self-awareness. This “potential" is the kundalini energy, often represented as a snake lying coiled up at the base of our spine. Using the technologies of kundalini yoga, the snake awakens and rises upward, purifying and clearing our chakras (energy centers in the body), until it reaches our crown chakra at the top of our head, where it reunites us with the Divine Source. This unification is often referred to as a “kundalini awakening”, and is the process of self-actualization – the realization or fulfillment of one’s talents and potentialities.
Along with expanded consciousness, there are numerous physical benefits to this practice. Through conscious breathing and physical postures, the nervous system learns to appropriately stimulate and soothe. The body and mind are trained to remain calm and in command during difficult, uncomfortable, and high pressure situations. The combination of movement and breathing also works to somatically release stored trauma within the body, helping individuals process and cope with ptsd. Recent studies have also shown that certain meditations and kriyas (sequence of postures) can help with age-related cognitive decline, improve sleep, increase self esteem, increase energy levels, and sharpen mental clarity. Kundalini yoga has also proven effective for breaking addictions and destructive habits.
Typically a kundalini yoga class involves chanting or listening to mantra, which offers healing through sound vibration. The sounds and syllables of the mantras effectively restructure your molecular structure through vibration. The mudras, or hand gestures, used during practice direct energy flow by placing pressure on particular energy channels and meridian points.
Kundalini yoga has been passed down for thousands of years to benefit humanity. Humans are experiencing higher stress and increased pressures both personally and geo-politically. We continue to diverge and disconnect from one another, ourselves, and our planet. There is no better time to give this ancient science & technology a try to reunite mind, body, & spirit. Use the four technologies of Kundalini yoga to strengthen your mind and body, while releasing the pain & worries of the past so you can live joyfully in the present.
